[ Microsoft picks Seinfeld image overhaul ]

August 22, 2008   |   By Associated Press with files from Marketing staff

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld will appear in Microsoft Corp.’s next Windows advertising campaign.

A person familiar with the plans confirmed a Wall Street Journal report Thursday that named Seinfeld as the company’s new pitchman. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition on anonymity because the plans have not yet been formally announced.

Seinfeld is being brought on board to help brighten Microsoft’s image as the company tries to move past its bumpy launch of Windows Vista.

According to the Journal, Microsoft will spend $300 million on its new advertising campaign set to launch Sept. 4, the first from Miami agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky. The ads will reportedly feature Seinfeld, who will be paid $10 million for the work, alongside Microsoft chair Bill Gates and deliver the message that the much maligned Windows Vista operating system can break down communications barriers, with the tag line expected to be “Windows, not walls.”
