The United Church of Canada is hoping to make a mark with urban youth and community members with its “Paint your faith” program.

The Church has commissioned four aerosol artists–Chor Boogie, Siloette, Elicser and Mediah–to create an urban art installation covering a 30- by 60-foot exterior wall donated by the Metropolitan United Church of Toronto. The wall will be unveiled this Saturday at a party hosted by the church.

The mural will reflect the artists’ interpretation of faith. The artists weren’t given any design guidelines, said Malcolm Roberts, president of Smith Roberts Creative Communications, the agency behind the effort.

“We’re not dictating to anyone what they should believe, so we left this quite open to them. We’ve been watching with just as much curiosity as it unfolds,” he said.

A Paint your Faith YouTube video follows the progress made thus far and introduces audiences to the artists and the program itself, which is another way to show how the United Church is connecting with urban youth, said Roberts.

“We try to find non-traditional ways to reach people outside advertising that says ‘Come to the United Church’ because we know that wouldn’t work, people would just reject that,” he said.

The project is sponsored by WonderCafe.ca, the interactive website the agency created for the United Church in 2006 that provides a place for people 35 to 45 to discuss family, moral or spiritual issues, said Roberts.

“We developed the website as a stepping stone, as a bridge for people to be able to go there and explore their spirituality and explore these questions,” he said.

Visitors to Saturday’s party will be encouraged to create their own expressions of faith on available canvasses. Roberts said the Church is looking to extend the program across Canada, with hopes of sharing the images at WonderCafe.ca.

“Paint Your Faith is an extraordinary celebration of art and faith,” said Rev. Dr. Keith Howard, executive director of the WonderCafe program and The United Church of Canada, in a release.
