Coast Capital Savings is putting new life into its free chequing campaign by expanding two popular television ads online.

Vivian Caporale, head, branding and advertising for the Surrey, B.C.-based credit union, said "Restriction" which originally aired in 2004 and "No fees equals no stress" that aired in 2008 performed well in terms of low wear-out, enjoyability and high brand linkage.

"Here's a client extending an old, proven campaign in new media," said Chris Staples a partner in Rethink, the credit union's agency of record.

In "Restriction" a man with an afro enters a branch and says to the teller "Come on man…there's got to be a catch, I just don't believe it unless there's some type of restriction." The teller answers: "Okay, you have to have an afro to qualify."

In the second spot, a man runs his hand through what's left of his hair and tells his wife, "You know, I think my hair loss is dealing with the banks and all their fees." When they enter the bank, all the men have long flowing locks.

New big box and leaderboard ads on websites such as Canada.com, Yahoo.ca, MSN.ca and TheWeatherNetwork.com, have brought back the main character from "Restriction," conversing through speech bubbles with Julie, the credit union's online greeter on various. The ads launched at the end of January.

On March 1, another execution inspired by "No fees equals no stress" will launch complete with interactive creative.

"If you are on one of those sites where our ads appear you can use your mouse to move a lever to grow somebody's hair," said Caporale. "It's going to correspond to an axis of low stress and high stress, so the lower the stress the more hair you have."

Caporale said Coast Capital plans to produce a television campaign launching a new product in the spring.
