The Globe and Mail will publish a Sunday edition for the British Columbia market during the upcoming 2010 Olympic Winter Games, making it the only seven-day newspaper in the region.
The editions will run Feb. 14, 21 and 28, and be available to subscribers, sold in more than 1,000 retail outlets in Vancouver, Whistler and Victoria, and available to the rest of Canada online as an e-edition.
According to Globe general manager and associate publisher in B.C. Jim Jennings, it will be a three-section edition featuring an up-front news section, a British Columbia section, and a section of all-Olympic coverage.
"It is not a cut-down version," he said, adding the paper will have more than 50 journalists in the province for the Games. "It will be the best news coverage available in Canada that Globe readers are used to."
Producing more print editions may sound oh-so 20th Century, but Jennings said the added editions offer B.C. readers, and Olympic attendees specifically, something an online-only product couldn't.
"During the Games, I think a lot of people in B.C. will be running from point to point so the advantage of print over online is heightened," he said.
"The venues are saying to show up two to three hours in advance, so there will be a desire to do something in that time and the opportunity to have a print product in your hands is a chance for the Globe to highlight the quality of our product to those who might not be aware of it.
"Readers will be able to follow the story of the Games seamlessly from the opening ceremonies to the closing ceremonies," added Jennings. "It also allows an opportunity for our advertisers to provide a continuous message to their clients."
The Globe is the "official national newspaper supplier" of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and "national print partner" of Canada's Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium.
