Holiday Cheer: The Hive’s ‘Invent’ calendar

Toronto agency The Hive sent us a package last week – a box styled like a 60s-era wood burning kit that promised a perfect holiday tool.

Called an “Invent Calendar,” it contains 24 numbered boxes and a simple set of instructions.

This holiday countdown will be a little different from your run of the mill advent calendar experience. Each door hides the next piece you need to invent a very special holiday something. Self-control is key. Only one piece per day. Stick with it and your reward will be the perfect just-in-time-for-the-holidays tool.

In the first box was a wooden cylinder (is “dowel” the right word?) with several small holes drilled into its ends and side. Box two contained two smaller wood nub thingies, glue and sandpaper.

Normally, being the clumsiest human on earth, I would run screaming from any craft that requires fine motor skills beyond what it would take to trace my hand on paper and paint on turkey feathers. But having just read Nick Offerman’s Paddle Your Own Canoe, I fee like I might be able to handle this.
