Duncan Fulton, chief marketing officer for Canadian Tire’s FGL Sports division, has been named marketing executive of the year at the 10th annual International Business Awards.

Nicknamed the Stevies – from the name Stephen, derived from the Greek work for “crowned” – the IBAs are billed as the world’s only international, all-encompassing business awards program. The awards will be formally presented during a gala in Barcelona on Oct. 14.

After spending most of the 1990s in the political realm, first as communications officer for then New Brunswick Premier Frank McKenna and eventually working his way up to press secretary for former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien at the age of 25, Fulton departed for the private sector in 2000.

He spent nearly eight years with Fleishman-Hillard as senior partner/general manager before joining Canadian Tire in 2009 as senior vice-president of communications and FGL Sports CMO.

The U.S. led all Stevie winners with 70 golds, followed by South Korea with 43. Canada ranked sixth overall with 11.

Toronto-based RSA Insurance was among the most honoured companies at the IBAs, winning a gold Stevie in the Marketing Department of the Year category, beating out another Canadian company, BlueCat.

RSA also won gold in the Marketing Campaign of the Year (financial services & insurance) and silver in the Business-to-Business Marketing Campaign of the Year categories for its “Get Your Motor Running” campaign.

Toronto’s Harbinger Communications also won gold Stevies in both the Small-Budget Marketing Campaign of the Year (under $3 million) and the Viral Marketing Campaign of the Year, for overseeing the first consumer marketing campaign for Petcurean Pet Nutrition, including the launch of its new “Savour Every Moment” brand positioning.

Winners were chose from more than 3,300 nominations from more than 50 countries. All organizations worldwide are eligible to compete, and be nominated in categories including management, marketing, public relations, customer service and new products.
