Subaru shows the many sides of rally racing

Subaru is giving auto enthusiasts a comprehensive look at its 2011 WRX STI rally car with online videos shot during a stage of the 2010 Rally of the Tall Pines in Bancroft, Ont.

Granted unfettered access to the WRX driven by championship rally driver Pat Richard, Subaru’s agency DDB Canada mounted four high-definition cameras on the vehicle: a bumper cam, dash cam, clutch cam and side cam.

According to DDB copywriter Daniel Bonder, the objective was to create a video that would appeal to hardcore automotive enthusiasts. “We knew that just another rally video wasn’t going to cut it for our demographic,” said Bonder. “So we created an interactive YouTube video that’s inspired more by video games than by rally content typically seen on TV.”

The YouTube clip is part of the larger “Pure Performance” campaign that debuted in late 2010, with an emphasis on highlighting the WRX’s rally pedigree and performance. The four videos have garnered more than 123,000 views since debuting in December.

“We put the power of WRX rally in people’s hands,” said DDB art director Yusong Zhang. “This interactive YouTube video allows viewers to choose between four aggressive angles to shape their rally experience in real time. In creating these videos, we actually maxed out the possible number of annotations that Youtube allows for each video—as far as we know, that’s a YouTube first.”

It’s too bad Subaru never took advantage of their WRC success when they had it. Solberg could have easily sold the STI around the world had they thought of using the WRC as a way to market their vehicles. It’s funny to me that both Subaru and Mitsubishi are now using rally footage and “heritage” to sell their cars while neither of them are in the WRC any more. Only Ford and Citroen remain with Mini entering this year.

I hope that this commercial is a precursor for Subaru to reenter the WRC in 2012.

If you don’t like driving, what is it about cars that you are enthusiastic about?
