BlackBerry unveils Torch to challenge iPhone

Rogers and Telus say they will offer the new BlackBerry Torch “later this year.”

Research In Motion officially released details about its latest smartphone Tuesday at a press conference Tuesday in New York.

The company hopes the new touchscreen model, which also has a slide-out keyboard, will challenge Apple‘s iPhone.

The BlackBerry Torch is packed with consumer-friendly features, including links to social networks including Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.

It’s being sold in the U.S. for $199 with a two-year contract. No details were released on Canadian pricing or a specific release date.

RIM is also pushing a new operating system as a means to better surf the web, play music and video and, of course, make calls.

The latest web browser also supports tabs to view multiple sites simultaneously and is designed to automatically format text for easiest reading.

A new multimedia feature allows users to wirelessly access their iTunes library over Wi-Fi and download songs to a BlackBerry.
