Copps Coliseum, Hamilton, Ont.’s major sports and event venue, has a new name. It has been renamed FirstOntario Centre now that FirstOntario Credit Union has acquired the naming rights.
The agreement was completed by Front Row Marketing Services on behalf of Global Spectrum and the City of Hamilton.
The deal was announced Friday by the City of Hamilton and Global Spectrum, the group that operates the 28-year-old facility. The new name takes effect immediately.
The venue’s general manager, Global Spectrum’s Scott Warren, said in a release that FirstOntario is showing its continued support of the City of Hamilton by acquiring the name rights.
Kelly McGiffin, FirstOntario CEO, added that the company wanted to “contribute in a tangible way to [Hamilton’s] continued revitalization, just as Victor Copps had envisioned.” Copps was the city’s mayor during the ’60s and ’70s.
The venue is home to the American Hockey League’s Hamilton Bulldogs, and has held events from the World Junior Hockey Championships to Rush concerts over the years.
