This is really interesting. From the clients that I work with in Traditional Media, I’d say that the results are pretty accurate.

Most of the Small Business owners that I work with think Social Media is an interesting distraction. The majority of them don’t feel they can immediately monetize these platforms so they don’t invest any resources in them.

The vast minority view social media as an opportunity – a competitive advantage.

Of this group, the leaders understand that they can create their own networks and branded communities around their product and/or service. That by listening to their fans and followers, they can scale their message distribution at virtually no charge. That there are local influencers in their industry more powerful than most radio personalities, TV hosts or columnists.

Social business will become the norm. There are too many big players that control the attention of customers to ignore any longer. Canadian adoption of social business will increase over time. The companies who start building their networks now will be the first to benefit. These pioneers will tell their friends about their success which will prompt other business owners to build their own networks in turn.

Only when a company allocates significant resources (time, people, money) can they benefit from this new method of connection. As Mitch Joel would say, Everyone is connected. Is your business connected to Everyone?
